Arrowroot powder is a starchy substance that’s extracted from the root of a tropical plant known as Maranta arundinacea. Arrowroot powder is extracted in simpler, more traditional methods, without the use of high heat. Sometimes arrowroot powder is known as arrowroot flour or arrowroot starch and they’re all the same thing. It’s simply a white, powdery starch that’s naturally grain-free, vegan and paleo-friendly.
Perfect for gluten-free cooking, it is a great substitute for cornstarch and flour and is often used as a thickening agent in baking, sauces, gravies, soups and puddings.
Organic arrowroot powder does not turn sauces cloudy (unlike cornflour) so is often used when a clear or glossy appearance is desired.
Use about 1 tablespoon of arrowroot powder to 1 cup of sauce or liquid to be thickened. Firstly, mix the arrowroot with a small amount of water then add slowly to the dish stirring constantly. Heat over a medium or high heat for about 5 mins or until the sauce is thickened.
